Bring a touch of French style to your Christmas entertaining

If you’re anything like me, you’re  sometimes so distracted and caught up in sorting out all the Christmas presents you need to buy, that you suddenly find that Christmas is here and you haven’t had a chance to think about whether you need to buy more glasses, crockery and tablelinen so you’re ready for your guests over Christmas and New Year. If that’s the case, here are a few ideas to help you get your tableware in shape for your Christmas entertaining.

First of all, I think it’s always important to have pretty champagne glasses that add a touch of sophistication to the celebrations – whether it’s for Christmas lunch or New Year’s Eve toasts. We have a number of hand painted champagne flutes that we think will fit the bill. A range of 3 designs in gold and white that are absolutely ideal for the festive season.

Alternatively if prefer to add a splash of colour to the table, we have some gorgeous hand painted champagne glasses in shades of aqua and purple that will certainly add a certain “je ne sais quoi” to quaffing your favourite fizz.

If you’re looking for wine glasses, we have a number of hand painted glasses that will make a pretty addition to the Christmas table, and wine glasses with attractive etched designs that will certainly add a touch of French style to your celebrations. Simply go to the glassware section of the site to view the full range.

On to crockery now, and I think that when you’re entertaining at Christmas  it’s always nice to have pretty bowls and dishes for nibbles and dips – or to serve those fantastic little appetisers you can buy in M&S. This is where the range of hand painted tableware from Festin Coquin comes in handy. With the wide range of small bowls and dishes that we have on the site you’ll be spoilt for choice! Choose from scalloped or heart-shaped dishes at £13.75 each or slightly smaller square versions at £10.75. Mix and match the patterns and shapes for maximum impact. We just love these little dishes – not only are they microwave and dishwasher proof, they can also go in the oven – so you can use them for individual creme brulees, tarts or crumbles. We think they make great gifts as well.

….….

If you really want to push the boat out, you can create a great statement piece by combining the dishes with one of our square platters. A single heart-shaped dish or scalloped dish in the centre of the platter can hold the dip, with the crisps or breadsticks around it. Or place four square dishes on the platter for maximum impact. All the small dishes can be viewed in the French tableware section of the site.

If you’re looking to ring the changes with your dinnerware this year, we have a wide range of patterned  dinner plates and side plates from Festin Coquin as well as pretty, hand painted octagonal plates in blue, green or ivory from Souleo – another artisan producer based in Aix en Provence. Dinner plates are £15.95, side plates £13.95 and matching octagonal bowls are £19.25. All Souleo pottery is microwave and dishwasher safe.

….….

New Lifestyle Photography for the Website

We just completed some location photography to refresh some of the the photos on the website, and to showcase some of the new patterns of Festin Coquin and Souleo pottery that we’ve recently added to our range. It was a long day, but we’re delighted with the results. We’re really happy  that the new pics not only show off our products to great effect but also demonstrate how easy it is to mix and match colours, patterns and styles to bring a touch of Southern French style to your home.

Ideas for Christmas Gifts

This is the third in our series of articles for Christmas Gift ideas, and we thought that this time we’d highlight products dotted around the site that  have French text and so would be ideal for Francophiles - friends or family who have a love of French lifestyle, language and all things French. We’ve a range of items in the modern & fun category of kitchen accessories that fit the bill here…

….….

Alternatively, if you’re looking for something with a more retro flavour, we have a number of products which use old French logos and signage to create an attractive retro feel to kitchen accessories. You’ll find these in the country & retro section of the kitchen accessories category.

….……..

Last but not least, in our Artisan Collection we have a range of original bags and bag sets, hand made in gorgeous designs, where the illustrations include French text or wording that will appeal to the Francophile. All items in our Artisan Collection are despatched direct from France, so – if you think one of these might fit the bill as a Christmas gift for the Francophile in your life – we’d advise you to order these a bit earlier than other items on the site. Click here to go directly to the Bags section of the Artisan Collection.

….….

All our products are sourced from smaller French companies, so whatever you buy on the site will be French. It’s just that the items we’ve highlighted in this post are more obviously French because of the text that is part of their design.

Ideas for Christmas Gifts

In the second of our articles on Christmas gift ideas, we thought we’d take a look at some suggestions for the keen cook. Often the simplest thing to do is to buy the latest cookery book from Jamie Oliver, Georgio Locatelli etc. But if your friend or relative has a bit of a reputation as a good cook, he/she will either probably have bought it themselves, or someone else is likely to have bought it for them. So how about something a little bit different? We’ve got a range of country-style, metal cookbook holders that are really handy when you’re following a recipe and need to keep the book out of harm’s way and at the right page! Prices start at £19.95. Click here to to see our full range of country kitchen accessories.

…..…..

If you’re looking for something really original, then we have a wide range of Festin Coquin hand painted pottery that is becoming increasingly popular with our customers. As well as being microwave and dishwasher safe, all the dishes below can go in the oven – ideal for individual pies, tarts and crumbles. Of course these dishes can also be used for crisps, olives and nibbles. And at only £13.75 each, it won’t break the bank to buy a selection of the many different patterns we have in stock. Click here to see the full range of pottery cookware and storage .

…..…..

We’ve got a wide range of small kitchen accessories that will bring a touch of French country style to the kitchen, many of these are in zinc, which is always a popular choice. Provencal Tablecloths: a bit of background

Provençal fabrics – or indiennes – were first produced throughout France during the seventeenth century following the methods and designs of the imported fabrics from India. In 1686 the Royalty stopped the importation of the Indian fabric but, because Provence was not on royal land, production continued here and grew over the next two hundred years, with factories in Orange, Avignon, Tarascon and Aix. These fabrics, which originally served as women’s shawls, and are now mostly used for interior decoration, are brilliantly multi-coloured prints in kaleidoscopic floral and geometric patterns. Originally the dyes were obtained from natural materials and each colour in a design was applied with separate woodblock impressions.

There are a number of companies based in Provence that continue the tradition of fabric making – including Ensoleillade. Vents du Sud and Marat d’Avignon who supply our fabric products to the highest quality. Beware of imitations – there are products out there that are made elsewhere in France, and even in China!

Our provencal tablecloths are all 100% cotton and we have a range of both rectangular and round shapes. Rectangular tablecloths are 250cm long and round tablecloths are either 160cm or 180cm in diameter.  Many of our tablecloths are treated with a special Teflon coating – this protects the cloths from spills, making them completely wipeable. What this means is that they’re  absolutely ideally suited for heavy-duty use such as a kitchen or garden table. When you do want to wash them, they need to be washed at 40 degrees, and ironed on the reverse side of the cloth so as not to damage the Teflon protective coating. The great thing about these coated tablecloths is that they drape really well – unlike the oilcloth/plastified cloths that are available which are very shiny, and which tend to stick out at an angle from the table.

A French tablecloth in provencal fabric is a great way of bringing some welcome colour into the kitchen or dining room as the fabrics tend to focus on traditional provencal colours – attractive shades of blue or yellow, symbolising the sun and the azure skies of Provence.
